前者这个连词和后者这个复合连词是同义，都作“既然”讲，但不一定能通用：由前者连接的从句，与主语的因果关系较为明显（参见词目 755 ），而后者连接的从句，与主句的因果关系不甚明显。
例如：
Since you can't answer the question, perhaps we'd better ask some one else. 你既然不能回答这个问题，我们最好还是问问别人吧。
We'd better have our talk out, Jane ， now that we've begun.
-Gissing. 既然我们已谈开了，詹妮，就谈下去吧。
Since we have no money, we cannot buy it. 我们既然没有带钱，那就不买吧。（因果关系较为突出）
Now （ that ） I've heard the music I understand why I like it.
我听了音乐之后，才了解我为什么喜爱它。（第一次听到音乐，所以过去并不了解。）
