用于对比结构，前者这个连词多少有点像后者这个连词的用法；但是，如果前后两句是对称的排句，只消加标分号就行，用不着前者或后者来连接。
例如：
Motion is absolute and stagnation is relative. 运动是绝对的，而静止是相对的。
The magistrates are allowed to burn down houses while the
common people are forbidden even to light lamps. 只许州官放火，不准百姓点灯。
In an undeveloped country, don't drink the water ； in a developed country ， don't breathe the air. 在发展中国家里不要喝水，在发达国家里不要呼吸空气。
