这两个名词都可用来作“日子”讲，但不能通用：计算月份的日子，要用前者；计算星期的日子，要用后者（参见词目 258 ）。
例如：
When they happened to remain the day of the week and the date, they saw him begin to count and become uneasy.
他们可能还得耽搁一段时间，就看见他在计算天数并感到不安。
比较：“ What date is today? ”——“ Today is （ the ） fifth of July. ”“今天是几号？”——“今天是 7 月 5 日。”
“ What day is today? ”——“ Today is Friday. ”“今天是星期几？”——“今天是星期五。”
