表达愿望，这两个动词可以通用；只是前者所期待的事物其实现的可能性较大，所以在它的宾语从句中多半要加用 will 、 may 、 can 等情态助动词，而后者则往往要加用 could 、 would 等情态助动同（注：有的语法学家认为，后者的宾语从句也可以使用陈述结构，但美国英语仍保留使用虚拟结构）。
例如：
I hope you will work hard without complaint. 我希望你能任劳任怨。
We all hope there may never be another world war. 我们大家都希望不再爆发世界大战。
I wish I could help you. 我恨不得能帮帮你。（可惜，我无能为力）。
“ Do you know who wrote the letter? ”—“ I wish （ that ） I knew. ”“你知道这封信是谁写的吗？”——“我也想知道知道（可我并不知道）。”
比较：
I hope it is true 我希望这是事实。（可能是事实）
I wish it were true. 但愿如此。（可惜不是事实）
I hope （ that ） you will come a little earlier. 希望你能早些来。（表示希望）
I wish （ that ） you would come a little earlier. 盼望你能早些来。（提出要求）
