1a. 这两个复合连词同义，都作“只要”讲，只是 if … but 多半拆开使用，而 if （…） only 则既可拆开使用又可不拆开使用（注：就目前实际情况而论，后者也以拆开使用为多。参见词条 P.518 和 P.519 ）。
例如：
Much will be done if we but try. -S. Smiles. 只要我们敢于尝试，有很多事可以干。
We always have time enough if we will but use it aright. -Geothe. 只要使用恰当，时间总是够用的。
Life will give you what you ask of her if only you ask long enough and plainly enough. -E. Nesbit. 只要你不停地探索，而且探索得明确，人生是会给你所要求的一切的。
1b. 前者又可作“哪怕”讲，后者又可用来表达愿望；而且都要用于感叹结构。
例如：
If I could see you but for an hour ！哪怕我只能见到你一小时！（这里的 but 是个副词） If only he arrives in time ！但愿他能准时赶到！（ if only 不能拆开使用）
