GRAMMAR

A sentence is a group of words which expresses a statement, question, or order. A sentence usually has a verb and a subject. A simple sentence has one clause. A compound sentence or complex sentence has two or more clauses. See entry at ↑ Clauses.
Did you believe him?
I packed my gear and walked outside.
If it's four o'clock in the morning, don't expect them to be pleased to see you.

In writing, a sentence has a capital letter at the beginning and a full stop, question mark, or exclamation mark at the end. For more information, see entry at ↑ Punctuation.

incomplete sentences

In speech, it is possible to say something using a subordinate clause on its own, or a group of words which does not contain a verb. For example, if someone asks you when you are going home, you can say 'When I've finished' or 'This afternoon'.

Subordinate clauses and verbless groups of words are sometimes written as if they were sentences in informal letters, novels, and advertisements.

However, in any other kind of writing you should avoid writing these clauses and groups of words as if they were sentences.
