You usually use the verb stop to say that someone no longer does something. After stop, you can use either an '-ing' form or a 'to'-infinitive, but with different meanings.

If you stop doing something at a particular time, you no longer do it after that time.
We all stopped talking.
He couldn't stop crying.

If you stop to do something, you interrupt what you are doing in order to do something else. For example, if you are talking about someone who is walking somewhere, you can say 'She stopped to admire the view'; this means that she stopped walking and admired the view before starting to walk again.
I was driving near Toulon and stopped to walk in a pine wood.
I stopped to tie my shoelace.

If you are prevented from doing something, you can say that something stops you doing it or stops you from doing it.
Did any of them try to stop you coming?
How do you stop a tap dripping?
Nothing was going to stop Sandy from being a writer.

You do not say that something 'stops you to do' something.


'stop' and 'stay'


In conversation, you can use stop to say that someone is staying somewhere for a short time.
They're stopping a couple of nights.
I can go and stop with my brother for a couple of days.

In writing, you use stay, not 'stop'.
The children were staying with Betty's stepmother in Glasgow.
