There has two main uses. You use it in front of a verb such as 'be', or you use it as an adverb to refer to a place.


used in front of 'be'


You use there in front of 'be' to say that something exists or happens, or that something is in a particular place. When there is used like this, it is usually pronounced .In slow or careful speech, it is pronounced .
There must be a reason.
There was an accident and somebody got killed.
There was a new cushion on one of the settees.

After there, you use a singular form of 'be' in front of a singular noun group, and a plural form in front of a plural noun group.
There is a fire on the fourth floor.
There are big women and small men.

In conversation, some people use 'there's' in front of a plural noun group. For example, they say 'If it's foggy, there's more collisions'. This use is generally regarded as incorrect.


WARNING


You do not use there is or there are with 'since' to say how long ago something happened. You do not say, for example, 'There are four days since she arrived in London'. You say 'It's four days since she arrived in London' or 'She arrived in London four days ago'.
It's three months since you were here last.
Her husband died four years ago.


'there seems to be...'


You can use there in front of 'seems to be' to say that you have the impression that something exists, or that something is in a particular place. For example, you can say 'There seems to be a misunderstanding'. You do not say 'There seems a misunderstanding'.
There seems to be a problem.
I'm sorry, there seems to be a dirty mark on it.


'there happens to be...'


You can also use there in front of 'happens to be' to say that something is in a particular place by chance. For example, you can say 'There happened to be a post office in the next street'. You do not say 'There happened a post office in the next street'.
There happened to be a roll of thin nylon tubing lying on the desk.


used with other verbs


In formal English, there is sometimes used with other verbs to say that something exists or is in a particular place.
There still remains the point about creativity.
There follow below guidelines on two aspects of terminal connection.

In stories, there is sometimes used with 'was' or 'came' to say that something happened suddenly.
There was a tremendous explosion and the boat disintegrated.
There came the crack of a shot.


used as an adverb


In its other main use, there is used to refer to a place which has just been mentioned. When there is used like this, it is always pronounced .
I must get home. Bill's there on his own.
Come into the kitchen. I spend most of my time there now.


WARNING


You do not use 'to' in front of there. You do not say, for example, 'I like going to there'. You say 'I like going there'.
My family live in India. I still go there often.

You do not use there to introduce a subordinate clause. You do not say, for example, 'I went back to the park, there my sister was waiting'. You say 'I went back to the park, where my sister was waiting'.
There was still fear in closed communities, where everyone knew everyone else's business.


'their'


Do not confuse there with their, which is also pronounced . You use their to show that something belongs or relates to particular people, animals, or things.
I looked at their faces.
