used as a noun


A doubt is a feeling of uncertainty about something.
Frank had no doubts about the outcome of the trial.
I had moments of doubt.


'no doubt'


You add no doubt to a statement to say that you are assuming that something is true, although you cannot really be certain about it.
As Jennifer has no doubt told you, we are leaving tomorrow.
During the night you'll no doubt be enjoying the carnival atmosphere.

If you say there is no doubt that something is true, you mean that it is certainly true.
There's no doubt that it's going to be difficult.
There was no doubt that he was in a highly excitable condition.

Note that you must use a 'that'-clause after there is no doubt. You cannot use an 'if'-clause or a 'whether'-clause.

'without doubt'


Another way of emphasizing that something is true is to add without doubt to a statement. This is a rather formal use.
Hugh Scanlon became without doubt one of the most powerful men in Britain.


used as a verb


If you doubt whether something is true or possible, you think it is probably not true or possible.
I doubt whether it would have more than a limited appeal.
I doubt if Alan will meet her.

If someone says that something is the case, or asks you if something is the case, you can indicate that you think it is unlikely by saying 'I doubt it'.
'I believe I know you.' ---'I doubt it. I'm Frederica Potter.'
'Do your family know you're here?' ---'I doubt it.'

Note that you do not say 'I doubt so'.
