释义 cook

'cook' used as a noun

A cook is someone who cooks meals as their job.
Each house had a cook and an assistant cook.

You can also describe anyone's ability to cook by using cook with an adjective. For example, you can say that someone is a good cook or a bad cook.
Are you a good cook?
Appuhamy was an excellent cook.

'cook' used as a verb

If you cook a meal or a particular type of food, you prepare it for eating and then heat it, for example in an oven or saucepan.
As dawn broke we began to cook our breakfast.
We cooked the pie in the oven.

Note that cook is only used to talk about food, not drinks.

Several other verbs can be used to talk about the preparation of food and drinks:

'make'

If you make a meal or a drink, you combine foods or drinks together to produce something different. Note that someone can make a meal without heating anything.
I made his breakfast.
I have made you a drink.

'prepare'

Prepare is used in two ways. If you prepare food, you clean or cut it so that it is ready to be used.
Prepare the vegetables. Peel and slice the celeriac, and then cut into fine strips.

To prepare a meal or drink means the same as to make it (see above). This is a fairly formal use.

'get'

If you get a meal, you prepare it or cook it. You can also say that someone gets a meal ready. If you get a drink, you either mix drinks together or pour a drink.
Then I'd get the tea ready.
I was downstairs getting the drinks.

'fix'

In American English, if you fix a meal or drink, you make it (see above).
Sometimes Jean would come in and fix breakfast for both of them.
Morris fixed himself a stiff drink.

There are many verbs which refer to different ways of cooking things:

'bake', 'roast'

When you bake or roast something, you cook it in an oven without liquid. You bake bread and cakes, but you roast meat. When you roast potatoes, you cook them in an oven in some fat. You can also roast a large piece of meat or a bird over a fire.

Note that you use roast, not 'roasted', to describe meat and potatoes that have been roasted.
...a traditional roast beef dinner.

'grill', 'toast'

When you grill or toast something, you cook it under or over strong heat. You grill meat and vegetables, but you toast slices of bread. Speakers of American English usually use broil rather than 'grill'.

'boil', 'poach', 'steam'

When you boil something, you cook it in boiling water. When you poach something, you cook it gently in shallow hot water. You can also steam something; that is, cook it in the steam rising from a pan of hot water.

'fry'

When you fry something, you cook it in hot fat or oil.

'casserole', 'stew', 'braise'

When you casserole, stew, or braise something, you cook it fairly slowly in a liquid or sauce.
