词组 | regret |
释义 | regret When a preposition follows the noun regret, the usual choice is for: • ... his bitter regrets for past happiness —T. S. Eliot, "Shakespeare and the Stoicism of Seneca," in Selected Essays, 1932 • ... regrets for past mistakes —Times Literary Supp., 29 Apr. 1955 Note that in the Eliot citation "regrets for" means something like "regretful longings for," whereas in the second citation it means simply "regretful feelings for." The second citation illustrates the more common usage. Other prepositions that may occur after regret are at and over, neither of which would be idiomatic with the "regretful longings" sense, but both of which are possible with the "regretful feelings" sense. |
