词组 epic
释义 epic
Various popular uses of this literary word have been criticized from time to time. In its primary sense, epic denotes a long narrative poem such as the Iliad or the Odyssey, in which the deeds of historic or legendary figures are recounted. It also has several extended senses in which it applies to such modern phenomena as big-budget historical movies and double-overtime basketball games. These extended senses are sometimes used in hyperbolic ways and that makes them easy targets for anyone who scorns hyperbole, but they persist in widespread and largely uncontroversial use:
... the faculty at Oxford ... put on an epic demonstration of power —Gus Tyler, Change, Winter 1971-72
... this most durable of film epics is still going strong —Robert Manning, Atlantic, February 1973
The most spirited and satisfying new Western epic in several years —New Yorker, 31 Oct. 1983
... an upset, lacrosse followers say, of nearly epic proportions —Bob Kravitz, Sports Illustrated, 4 Aug. 1986
