词组 | altho |
释义 | altho Alt ho is one of the simplified spellings whose adoption was urged by the Simplified Spelling Board and other bodies concerned with spelling reform around the end of the 19th century (see spelling reform). Krapp 1927 says altho is to be found here and there through all the modern period of English, but that it did not have much widespread use until the movement for spelling reform had reached its peak. Baron 1982 notes that altho was one of a dozen reformed spellings adopted by the National Educational Association in 1898. Our evidence shows that by the 1920s quite a few authors and publishers were using at least some of the reformed spellings in print, including this one: • ... Bryant's list remains a significant document, altho its impressiveness has departed —Brander Matthews, Essays on English, 1921 • And altho in this country —Publishers Weekly, 2 Nov. 1918 • Altho forced to resign —Literary Digest, 20 Nov. 1926 Some authors and publishers continued up into the 1950s: • Altho Nida speaks of native tutors —Morris Swa-desh, Word, April 1954 Our most recent evidence suggests, however, that altho is dropping out of use in print, altho it may well continue to thrive in personal writing. |
