词组 | go |
释义 | go 1. The past tense of go is went; the past participle is gone. Those of you who are interested in etymology might try looking up the history of went, which was borrowed by go from another Middle English verb. In the speech of the less educated—H. L. Mencken's vulgate— the two forms are often interchanged. • The people on our place always say, "we gone to see it," or "we gone and done it," when the action is past—never "went" when "went" would be correct —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 4 May 1955 Miss O'Connor herself used went as a past participle facetiously: • ... I can forget about going to Europe, having went —letter, 17 May 1958 Others use it unconsciously: • ... would have went home —radio sports announcer, 1 June 1984 These uses are not standard. 2. The newest sense of go as a transitive verb means "say." This sense has been noticed in Safire 1984 and by various correspondents to this company and to newspapers. The use, which seems to have first attracted attention in the mid 1970s, has been noted as common in the speech of children and young adults. It is a speech form, seldom seen in print. Here is one of our few examples: • I'm the last person to admit I've achieved anything.... But now my friends say it to me, and I go, "You're right, I can't deny it any more. We've made it." —Steve Martin, quoted in Newsweek, 3 Apr. 1978 One of Satire's correspondents points out that in speech go can differentiate between direct and indirect quotation. In speech there is little or no difference between "She says you're cute" and "She says, 'You're cute.'" But "She goes, 'You're cute'" is always direct quotation. This is a clever explanation, but there are ways to disambiguate "She says you're cute" through intonation, stress, and juncture without using go for say. The usage appears to exist in British English too. Our pronunciation editor noted this pun on it in a British radio comedy called "I'm Sorry, I'll Read That Again" in June 1976: • ANNOUNCER.... the Lone Stranger's horse went lame. HORSE. Neigh. Lame, lame, lame. Just remember that this sense of go is a spoken use. 3. See go and. |
