释义 | thing As a look in any dictionary will show, thing is a word having many uses and many senses. Its occurrence is common at all levels of usage, but it turns up especially often in speech and in writing that has something of the casual quality of speech: • Culture is really the thing here—it's bigger than surfing —E. B. White, letter, 3 Mar. 1965 • ... the diplomatic thing to do in Europe is give the natives a piece of the action —Neil Mclnnes, Barron's, 10 Apr. 1972 • The thing is, I'm not just another American being snotty about English poetry —Donald Hall, Goatfoot Milktongue Twinbird, 1978 • ... that old thing about raising the standard of cooking in Britain —Kingsley Amis, Times Literary Supp., 15 July 1983 Several commentators have noticed that it is often easy to revise thing out of a sentence, as by replacing it with a more specific word. Sometimes it can be dropped altogether: for example, instead of writing, "The first thing he told me was ..." you could simply write, "First he told me ..." But should you? The answer to that question really depends upon considerations of tone and rhythm. Good writers are directed in such matters by their ear—their sense of what sounds right in a particular context. We recommend that you let your ear tell you when and when not to use thing. |
