词组 knot
释义 knot
Nautically speaking and strictly speaking, a knot is a unit of speed equal to one nautical mile per hour, and a vessel is described as traveling at (or "making") a certain number of knots. Also occasionally heard is such usage as "The ship was under way at 20 knots an hour," in which knot has the meaning "nautical mile." This sense of knot is widely derided by those in the know as a landlubber's mistake, and you would probably be prudent not to indulge in its use, at least within earshot of sailors or usage commentators. If you do happen to use it, however, and if some seafaring or word-watching type accuses you of gross ignorance, you might just point out that it was first entered in a dictionary in 1864 and was first recorded a century before that in the written works of two famous English sailors:
The ship went ten knots an hour —Admiral George Anson, Anson's Voyage Round the World, 1748 (OED)
The strong tide, though even here it ran five knots an hour —Captain James Cook, Voyages, published in 1790 (OED)
