词组 | certainly |
释义 | certainly Three editions of Strunk & White (1959, 1972, 1979) contain an objection to the indiscriminate use of certainly as an intensive. The admonition carries no specific examples and is vaguely worded; it is not very clear what the usage to be avoided is. However, as this is an issue surviving from the 1920s and 1930s, we can get a more definite idea from older sources. Jensen 1935 objects to "we certainly had a good time" and Whipple 1924 to "it is certainly true" and "we will certainly do so." We also have a couple of newspaper clippings from the 1930s that say about the same thing. If you look at the expressions objected to, you can easily understand why this is a dead issue. The expressions are perfectly standard in speech and are common enough in writing: • This is certainly true in the case of medicine —T. R. McConnell, AAUP Bulletin, September 1969 • I would certainly like to work in journalism for a while —James Brady, quoted in Book Digest, February 1978 • ... not many persons in the Roman world could have afforded them since they were certainly extremely costly —Times Literary Supp., 18 Dec. 1969 • ... it is certainly true that the set of integers is a subset of itself —Mary P. Dolciani et al., Modern Algebra and Trigonometry, 1973 |
