词组 | degreed |
释义 | degreed This adjective is termed "a linguistic horror" by Harper 1975, 1985 and is laid to the jargon of the employment placement industry. James J. Kilpatrick, however, thinks "If a dog can be pedigreed, I see no reason why a professor couldn't be degreed" (Mayville [Ky.] Ledger-Independent, 25 Aug. 1984). The formation of degreed from a noun by addition of -ed is no different from that of pedigreed or footed or the famous "fruited plains" of "America the Beautiful." The OED shows that degreed has been in existence since 1560, so no modern-day personnel supervisor should be blamed for coining the word. Employers do get a lot of mileage out of it, though; more than half of our citations come from help-wanted ads. Here are a few examples of use: • Degreed Blacks are finding that as bad as the economy is, if they have the right degree they can get a job —Black Collegian, March/April 1975 • Its staff includes three degreed librarians, paraprofessionals, and graduate assistants —Lisa Harbatkin, Bluegrass Unlimited, October 1981 • ... hospital undergoing major expansion seeks degreed Accountant —advt., N.Y. Times, 9 May 1982 • Dressage instructor, degreed and trained in Germany is seeking position —advt., Chronicle of the Horse, 3 Aug. 1984 • We are seeking degreed engineers in all disciplines — advt., Engineering Opportunities, August 1967 |
