前者这个物主形容词是 who 和 which 的所有格形式，所以既可修饰人——包括动物，又可修饰物（参见词目 877 ）。如果被引导的定语从句中，那个先行词既不是人又不是动物，那就得使用后者这个短语了。
例如：
Whose dictionary is this? 这是谁的词典？（是指人）
This is the cow whose legs are broken. 这就是断了腿的母牛？（是指牲口）
This is the plant whose flowers are on the table. 这种植物长的花就放在桌上。（是指物）
We climbed a mountain, the top of which was covered with snow. 我们爬上了上面盖满白雪的山顶。
There are two left, one of which is almost finished and the other of which is not quite. 有两个剩下；一个差不多完了，另一个还没有完。
