表达距离；前者这个副词多半要用于疑问和否定两种结构；肯定结构，则要改用后者这个状语词组。
例如：
How far have they gone? 他们已去多远了？
They haven't gone very far, I suppose. 我看，他们没有去多远。
比较：
I don't live far from the centre of town. 我住得离市中心不远。
I live a long way from the centre of town. 我住得离市中心很远。
The young will go far. 后来者居上。（这里的 far 是用作喻义，算是例外。）
They have gone a long way. 他们已去远了。（肯定句不能用 far ）
