这两个短语介词要加以区别： at the back ／ rear of 作“在……的后面”讲，是 in front of 的反义介词； in the back ／ rear of 则作“在……的后部”讲，是 in the front of 的反义介词（注：美国英语两者都作“在……的后面”讲，有时也常用 in back of 或 back of ， = behind 。（参见词条 P.392 ）。
比较：
The garden is at the back ／ rear of the cottage. 菜园就在茅屋的后面。
The kitchen is in the back ／ rear of the cottage. 厨房就在茅屋的后部。
There is a big tree at the back ／ rear of cottage. 在茅屋的后面有棵大树。（大树和茅屋不是连在一起的。）
I live in a room in the back ／ rear of the cottage. 我住在茅屋后部的一间房间里。（房间和茅屋是连在一起的。）
