作“迟到”讲， behind （ the ） time 这个短语总是用于时间有硬性规定的场合（参见词条 P.1065 ）；否则，则以改用 late for 这个表语较为合适。
例如：
Dora has come to class behind （ the ） time. 多拉上课迟到了。（上课时间是有硬性规定的）
Sorry, I am late for dinner. 抱歉，吃饭我来迟了。（一般家庭开饭时间未必有硬性规定）
