1a. 这两个复合连词大有区别： if only 是作“只要”讲，其中的 if 是中心词，而 only 只是加强 if 的语气的（参见词条 P.517 和 P.518 ）； only if 则是“必须在……条件下才……”的意思，其中的 only 是中心词，而 if 则是用来连接从句的。
例如：
He'll pass the examination if he only studies hard. 只要他读书用功，就能考取。
You could know your own language only if you compared itwith other languages-Engels. 只有当你把本国语言同其它语言进行比较后，你才能懂得本国语言。
比较：
He'll pass the examination if he only studies hard. 只要他读书用功，就能考取。
He'll only pass the examination if he studies hard. 如果他用功读书，才能考取。
1b. 两者在句中的词序也有这样一个讲究：由前者连接的从句以放在主句之前较为顺口，而由后者连接的从句则前置或后置都可以。
比较：
If only we try hard I am sure we will win the game. 只要我们努把力，我才有把握说，我们一定能打赢这场比赛。（ if only 是作“只要”讲，放在主句之前较为顺口。）
Iam sure we will win the game only if we try hard. 我有把握说，只要我们努把力，这场比赛我们准能打赢。（由 only if 连接的从句等于 if we only try hard ，所以放在主句之前或之后都可以。）
