The past tense and past participle of the verb is paid, not 'payed'. ◊ used as a verb If you pay for something which has been done or provided, you give money to the person doing or providing it. Pupils would be paid for any work they did. Willie paid for the drinks. Note that you must use 'for' after pay in sentences like these. ◊ WARNING If you pay for a drink that is drunk by someone else, you do not say that you 'pay' them the drink. You say that you buy them the drink. Let me buy you a drink. Monty bought Kaspar at least half-a-dozen whiskies. If you pay for a meal that is eaten by someone else, you do not say that you 'pay' them the meal. You say that you buy them the meal or treat them to it. I'll buy you lunch. She offered to treat them to dinner. ◊ used as a noun A person's pay is their wages or salary. She lost three weeks' pay. They paid 6.5 per cent of their pay to the National Insurance Fund. Note that you do not use 'a' with pay. You do not say, for example, 'It is a good pay'. You say 'The pay is good'. The pay is dreadful. ◊ other meanings You can say that someone pays a call or a visit. We went to pay a call on some people I used to know. It would be nice if you paid me a visit.
