Smell is used as a noun or a verb. The past tense and past participle of the verb is either smelled or smelt.


used as a noun


The smell of something is a quality it has which you are aware of through your nose.
...the smell of fresh bread.

used as an intransitive verb


If you say that something smells, you mean that people are aware of it because of its unpleasant smell.
The fridge is beginning to smell.

You can say that a place or object smells of a particular thing.
The room smelled of cigars.
Everything smelt of cats and cooked cabbage.

Note that you must use 'of' in sentences like these. You do not say 'The room smelled cigars'.

You can say that one place or thing smells like another.
Our kitchen smelt like a rubber factory.
The tutor's breath smelled like a full ashtray.

You can also use smell with an adjective to say that something has a pleasant or unpleasant smell.
What is it? It smells delicious.
The papers smelt musty and stale.

Note that you do not use an adverb after smell. You do not say, for example, that something 'smells deliciously'.


used as a transitive verb


If you can smell something, you are aware of it through your nose.
I can smell the aroma from the frying trout in the kitchen.
He could smell the rich fragrance of bamboo freshly chopped.

Note that you usually use 'can' or 'could' in sentences like these. You say, for example, 'I can smell gas'. You do not say 'I smell gas'. Note also that you do not use a continuous tense. You do not say 'I am smelling gas'.

If you want to say that someone became aware of a smell on a particular occasion in the past, you use the simple past tense, smelled or smelt.

He smelled the smell of burning fat.
I smelt smoke, so I got up and came out.
