You use the verb wait to say that someone remains in the same place, or avoids doing something, until something happens or someone arrives.
I waited in a reception room until a secretary came for me.
She had been waiting in the queue to buy some stamps.
The man waited, and said nothing.

You can say that someone waits for something or someone.
He waited for an answer.
He drew my picture while I waited for his mother.

You can also say that someone waits for a person or thing to do something.
She waited for me to say something.
I waited for Donald to come home.


WARNING


Wait is never used as a transitive verb. You do not say that someone 'waits' someone or something. You must use wait for.
