If one thing happens while another thing is happening, the two things happen at the same time.

In writing, people often use a non-finite clause beginning with while. For example, instead of writing 'I often knit while I am watching television', they write 'I often knit while watching television'.

'while' in concessive clauses


While has a special use which is not related to time. You use it to introduce a clause that contrasts with something else that you are saying.
Fred gambled his money away while Julia spent all hers on dresses.
While I have some sympathy for these fellows, I think they went too far.

A while is a period of time.
After a while, my eyes became accustomed to the darkness.
