词组 during
释义 during
You usually use during to say that something happens continuously or often from the beginning to the end of a period of time.
She heated the place during the winter with a huge wood furnace.
This was evident in the weekly column he wrote for the Guardian during 1963-1964.

In sentences like these, you can almost always use in instead of during. There is very little difference in meaning. When you use during, you are usually stressing the fact that something is continuous or repeated. See entry at ↑ in.

You can also use during to say that something happens while an activity takes place.
Fred had worked a great deal with her at Oxford during the war.
Ash was wondering angrily what they would think if a group of Indians behaved in a similar manner during a service at Westminster Abbey.

You can sometimes use in in sentences like these, but the meaning is not always the same. For example, 'What did you do during the war?' means 'What did you do while the war was taking place?', but 'What did you do in the war?' means 'What part did you play in the war?'

single events

Both during and in can be used to say that a single event happened at some point in the course of a period of time.
He had died during the night.
His father had died in the night.
She left Bengal during the late Spring of 1740.
Mr Tyrie left Hong Kong in June.

It is more common to use in in sentences like these. If you use during, you are usually emphasizing that you are not sure of the exact time when something happened.

WARNING

You do not use during to say how long something lasts. You do not say, for example, 'I went to Wales during two weeks'. You say 'I went to Wales for two weeks'. See entry at ↑ for.
