You use each in front of the singular form of a count noun to talk about every person or thing in a group. You use each rather than 'every' when you are thinking about the members of a group as individuals.

'each of'


Instead of using each, you can sometimes use each of. For example, instead of saying 'Each soldier was given a new uniform', you can say 'Each of the soldiers was given a new uniform'. Each of is followed by a determiner and the plural form of a count noun.
Each of the books has little bits of paper protruding from its pages.
Each of these phrases has a different meaning.
They inspected each of her appliances with care.

You also use each of in front of plural pronouns.
Each of us could be alone for most of the day.
They were all just sitting there, each of them thinking private thoughts.

When you use each of in front of a plural noun or pronoun, you use a singular form of a verb after the noun or pronoun.

Each of us looks over the passenger lists.


WARNING


You never use each without 'of' in front of a plural noun or pronoun.

If you want to emphasize that something is true about every member of a group, you can say each one of instead of 'each of'.
This view of poverty influences each one of us.
An expert lecturer can make each one of his listeners feel that they are the object of his attention.

You do not use words such as 'almost', 'nearly', or 'not' in front of each. You do not say, for example, 'Almost each house in the street is for sale'. You say 'Almost every house in the street is for sale'.
They show great skills in almost every aspect of school life.
Nearly every town has its own opera house.
Not every secretary wants to move up in the world.

You also do not use each or each of in a negative clause. You do not say, for example, 'Each boy did not enjoy football' or 'Each of the boys did not enjoy football'. You say 'None of the boys enjoyed football'.
None of them are actually African.
None of these suggestions is very helpful.

used after the subject


Each is sometimes used after the subject of a clause. For example, instead of saying 'Each of them received a new pair of boots', you can say 'They each received a new pair of boots'. In constructions like these, the subject and the verb are always plural.
They each chose a word from the list.
We each have our private views about it.

This type of construction is often used to indicate that an amount relates to each member of a group separately and not to the whole group. For example, if you say 'Arsenal and Everton each scored two goals', you are indicating that four goals were scored altogether, not two.
Bolivia and Paraguay each have around 700,000 workers away from home.

When you are talking about an amount like this, you often put each at the end of the clause.
They cost eight pounds each.
All three groupings polled 32 per cent each.
...large aluminium cylinders, weighing several tons each.

Each can be used as a pronoun to mean 'each person' or 'each thing'.
Elliott and Cram are trying to forget their poor performances here on Saturday. Each is planning a series of races in the next month.
None of the earlier stages are self-sufficient. Each is a preparation for the next.
If there is more than one convenient hostel, you could spend a few nights at each.

Each one is sometimes used instead of each.
The canoes went skimming down the river with five or six women in each one.
Babies are individuals. This means each one needs to be closely watched.


referring back to 'each'


You usually use a singular pronoun such as 'he', 'she', 'him', or 'her' to refer back to an expression containing each.
Each boy said what he thought had happened.

However, when you are referring back to an expression such as 'each person' or 'each student' which does not indicate a specific sex, you usually use they or them.
There was to be a flat rate charge for each individual, irrespective of where they lived.
