You also use guess to say that someone finds the correct answer to a problem or question without knowing that it is correct. I had guessed the identity of her lover. ◊ 'I guess' American speakers sometimes say I guess to indicate that they think that something is true or likely. I guess I got the news a day or so late. 'What's that?' ---'Some sort of blackbird, I guess.' American speakers also sometimes reply to a question in an affirmative way by saying 'I guess so'. Note that they do not say 'I guess it'.
