词组 make
释义 make
Make is a very common verb which is used in many different ways. The past tense and past participle of 'make' is made.

performing an action

Make is most commonly used to say that someone performs an action. For example, if someone suggests something, you can say that they make a suggestion. If someone promises something, you can say that they make a promise.
I think that I made the wrong decision.
He made the shortest speech I have ever heard.
In 1978 he made his first visit to Australia.

Here is a list of common nouns that you can use with make in this way:
arrangement, choice, comment, decision, enquiry, journey, noise, plan, point, promise, remark, sound, speech, suggestion, tour, trip, visit

You do not use make when you are talking generally about action, rather than mentioning a particular action. Instead you use do. For example, if someone is unsure what action to take, you do not say they do not know what to 'make'. You say that they do not know what to do.
What have you done?
You've done a lot to help us.
We'll see what can be done.

making an object or substance

If you make an object or substance, you construct or produce it.
Sheila makes all her own clothes.
You can make petroleum out of coal.

You can also say that someone makes a meal or a drink.
I made his breakfast.

See entry at ↑ cook.

When make is used to talk about constructing or producing something, it can have an indirect object. You say that you make someone something, or make something for them.
I have made you a drink.
We made collars for the horses.
I shall have a copy made for you.

making someone do something

If someone forces you to do something, you can say that they make you do it.
You've got to make him listen.
He meant to make them sit still.

Note that in active sentences like these, you do not use a 'to'-infinitive after make. You do not say, for example, 'You've got to make them to listen'.

However, in passive sentences you must use a 'to'-infinitive.
He is made to pay back the debt.
One old woman was made to wait more than an hour.

used to mean 'be'

Make is sometimes used instead of 'be' to say how successful someone is in a particular job or role. For example, instead of saying 'He will be a good prime minister', you can say 'He will make a good prime minister'.
You really mean it when you say he'll make a good president?
They make a good team.

used as a noun

Make is sometimes used as a noun. The make of something such as a car or radio is the name of the company that made it.
My own boots were a different make.

Make is usually followed by 'of' and another noun. After makes of you use either the plural or singular form of a noun. For example, you can say 'We sell all makes of cars' or 'We sell all makes of car'. The singular form is more formal.
There are now over a hundred makes of micro-computers for sale.
...tests on well-known makes of car.

After make of you use the singular form of a noun.
