　二者都有“相信”的意思。其区别在于：believe表示相信某人说的话是真的或相信某事会发生（或已经发生）；而believe in却多表示信赖某人或信仰某事物，相信其存在或价值，其后常接真理、宗教一类的词，接sb作宾语则指相信某人的人格。例如：
　I can believe him, but I cannot believe in him.　我可以相信他的话是真的，但是不相信他的为人。

　believe　与consider, think在用法上有以下相同之处：
1. 后面可以接that从句。例如：
　Do you believe〔consider, think〕 that jogging is helpful to your health? 　你认为慢跑对你的身体有益吗?
2. 后面可以接由名词或代词+to be（常常省略）的复合宾语。例如：
　Do you believe〔consider, think〕 Mr. Bell (to be) a good doctor? 　你认为贝尔先生是个好医生吗?
　I don't believe〔consider, think〕 it possible.　我认为这件事情是不可能的。
　Everybody believes〔considers, thinks〕 his living alone strange.　人人都认为他离群独居是不可思议的。
 ♣ believe, trust
　这两个词都有“相信”“信任”的意思。两者的区别在于：trust表示相信某人的为人或能力；believe则表示相信某人所说的话或其人格的可靠性。

　［误］ I believe him to come.
　［正］ I believe that he will come.
　［析］ believe接动词不定式作宾语补足语时，在主动式中，只能用过去时或完成体；若表示将来，则须使用that从句。只有在被动式才可使用动词不定式。例如：
　He is believed to arrive in time.　相信他会按时到达。
4. 我认为这是个错误，不是吗?
　［误］ I believe that it was a mistake, doesn't it?
　［正］ I believe that it was a mistake, wasn't it?
　［析］ 当陈述部分是主从复合句，主句谓语动词是believe时，如构成反意疑问句，其附加疑问句部分应与从句中的主谓一致。

1. I believe you, thousands wouldn't!表示马马虎虎地同意某人刚说的话的相当幽默的用语，意思是“我倒是相信你，可别人呢?”例如：
　"Excuse me, Kathy—don't think I'm not sitting next to you because I don't like you or anything —it's just that I've seen Ruth over there, and I've not spoken to her for ages!""I believe you, thousands wouldn't!" 　“请原谅，凯茜，不要以为我是因为不喜欢你什么的才不坐到你旁边，只是我看见了露思在那边，再说我好久没和她说过话了！”“我倒是相信你，可别人呢?”
2. If you believe that, you'd believe anything!是表示一点不相信的用语，意思是“你要是相信那个，那世上就没有你不相信的事了。”
3. Would you believe是企图抓住某人注意力的叫喊，经常是在某事的真实性有可疑之处时使用这一用语，意思是“你们也许会相信”。例如：
　"Ladies and gentlemen, this is, would you believe, the last rabbit of its kind in the world," the man at the fair shouted as he held up what looked like an old rag!　“女士们、先生们，这是，——你们也许会相信——世界上这类兔子就这一只了。”集市上的那个人举起一个像块破布似的东西叫道。
4. 在believe后用作宾语补足语的to be短语中， to be常可省略，但若其所表示的时间先于谓语动词，则必须保留，且须用动词不定式的完成式。
