　这组词都表示“延伸”。其区别是：extend指直线状的伸展，引申指扩展势力、范围、影响等；lengthen指增加长度或延长时间；prolong指把时间过程延长到超过通常或正常的限度；elongate是技术用语，指空间尺度的延伸；protract指无限地、不必要地或令人厌烦地拖长。

1. extend作“给予”“提供”解时，常给人以虚假和华而不实的印象，特别是在口语中。所以应尽量少用，可以用give来代替extend. 如表示“致谢”最好说：to give one's thanks，而少说to extend one's thanks.
2. extend本身已经有极度的意思了，再用to the utmost修饰意思就重复了。因此最多只能用fully来修饰。例如：
　The horse has been fully extended.　那匹马已经很使劲了。
