| 释义 | 1．expect 所指的也许是极不愿意被实现的事，例如：We have planned a picnic for this afternoon, but I expect a storm. 和 He expected his father, whom he loved deeply, to die before dark. 2．expect 后面接不定式，不接动名词，如可以说 I expect to see them tomorrow，不可说 I expect seeing them tomorrow。参见 anticipate 1 3．expect 是及物动词，后面不可加 for，如 They have been expecting the conference for months 里不可在 expecting 后面加上 for。 4．下面两句都可能有两个不同的意思： I expect you to do your duty. （1．我期待你尽你的责任。2．我要你尽你的责任。） I expect that you will do your duty. （1．我期待你尽你的责任。2．我要你尽你的责任。） 往往必须看了上下文才能看出是哪一个意思。但 I expect that you shall do your duty 只作“我要你尽你的责任”解。 5．expect 往往用作“以为”或“料想”解，如 I expect you met her yesterday 和 The student, we expect, has improved a great deal since he entered the college。这种用法在口语里很普通。 6．注意下面各句里的 tomorrow, soon, next Sunday 和 Some time next month 并不修饰 expect： I expect him tomorrow. I expect a letter from him to come soon. I expect a visit from him to take place next Sunday.
