His order was that the work be（不用was）started at once. 5．动词 order（命令）后可以接宾语和不定式。例如：He ordered them to start the work at once.和 He ordered the work to be started at once.不可没有宾语而直接接不定式，如不可说 He ordered to start the work at once。 6．He ordered the work to be started at once 是英美通用的，He ordered the work started at once（没有 to be）是美国英语。下面两句都是美国英语： They have ordered the house pulled down. The murderer has been ordered arrested. 7．可以说 He was ordered to India（他被命令到印度去）。在 ordered 后面加上 to go 也可以。 8．order 往往译作“定货单”，其实不一定是“定”，也不一定有“单”，如开了单向商店里买几件东西，是“定”而且有“单”，是 order，但向商店口头或用电话说要买什么东西，既不是“定”，也没有“单”，却也是 order。 9．We have sent an order for a hundred copies of the book 里的 order 是名词，注意后面接 for（偶尔接 of）。We have ordered a hundred copies of the book 里的 ordered 是动词，注意它是及物动词，后面没有 for。 10．说“依照交货单配货”，习惯用 execute 或 fill。例如：Your order for a hundred copies of the book has been executed（或filled）already.在美国通常用 fill。 11．下面四句里的 ordered 都有双宾语： My doctor has ordered me a holiday.（我的医生已经嘱我休假。） My doctor has ordered me cod liver oil.（我的医生已经嘱我服鱼肝油。） My mother has ordered me a new suit.（我的母亲已经替我买了一套新衣服。） I have ordered you a copy of H. W. Fowler's English Grammar.（我已经替你买了一册 Fowler 的《英语语法》。） 第三句可以改作 My mother has ordered a new suit for me。第四句可以改作 I have ordered a copy of H. W. Fowler's English Grammar for you。但第一句和第二句似乎不可这样改。 12．I have ordered a copy of the book from the bookseller 里的 from 改作 of 也可以。但 I have ordered a copy of the book from Beijing（地名）里的 from 不可改作 of。 13．money order, postal order 和 post-office order 后面接 for 和款额。例如：a money order for ¥200 14．汉语信函里的“遵命”、“方命”等表达方式里的“命”是客气话，在英语里不该用 order 来表示这意思，如 I shall be pleased to comply with your request 里的 request 不可改作 order, I am sorry I cannot do what you have asked me to (do) 里的 asked 不可改作 ordered。 15．order 有时指“被（定）购的货”。例如： Your order will be shipped this afternoon. Your order will reach you in a few days. The order has not yet been delivered. 所以 The order has been sent 可能有两个不同的意思：（1）购货通知已经发出。（2）所买的货已经发出。 16．in order to...（不定式）比单用 to...正式而语气重，在口语里极少用。so as to...比较不正式些，比较下面三句： He went to Europe to attend an important conference. He went to Europe so as to attend an important conference. He went to Europe in order to attend an important conference. 17．I am sending you the book in order for you to read it 里的 in order for you to read it 不是正常的英语，可以改作 in order to enable you to read it，但不及 for you to read 或 so that you may read it 自然。 18．下面每组里的第一句最普通，末句最不普通： 19．下面各句里的 in order 意思各不相同： Everything is in order.（一切正常。） The typewriter is in order.（这台打字机没有坏，可以用。） A fresh discussion of the question is now in order.（重新讨论这问题现在是适宜的。） Unless the weather clears up today, a further delay will be in order.（假使今天不转晴，也许要再耽搁一下。） 第三和第四句里的 in order 是美国英语。 |
