| 释义 | 1．可以说 the other two 和( the) two others, (the) two other 也有人说，但不普通（参见 2）。不可说 other two（没有 the）。可以说 the two other books 和 the other two books，但只可说two other books（没有 the），不可说other two books（没有 the）。 2．some other of his books, several other of my friends 等表达方式里的 other 现在不及 others 普通。 3．注意下面三句里的斜体字： She has received gifts other than flowers.（她所收到的东西不是花。） She has received other gifts besides flowers.（她收到了花和其他东西。） Here is a flower other than（偶尔用from）yours. 下面各句意思不同： He has visited every other country than England.（他到过英国以外的每个国家。） He has visited every other country besides England.（他到过英国，也到过英国以外的每个国家。） He has visited every other country except（或but）England.（他到过某国以外的每个国家，但不曾到过英国。） 注意别用第三句表达第一句的意思。 4．Shanghai is more populous than any other city in China 里的 other 不可省去，因为没有了它好像说“上海并不在中国”或“上海的人口比上海的人口多”了。同样地，下面两句里的 other 不可省去。 Iron is more useful than any other metal. I like oranges more than any other fruit. 5．比较下面两句： I wish he were other than he is. I wish he could conduct himself other than he does. 第一句里的 other 是形容词，第二句里的 other 被用作副词，有人以为该改用 otherwise。 6．other more important matters 是“（这［些］更重要的事以外的）其他更重要的事”，other and more important matters 是“其他的而且更重要的事”。 7．the other day（或 morning, afternoon, evening, night）作“不久以前的某天（或早晨、下午、晚上、夜里）”解。例如：I met him the other day（或 morning, afternoon, evening, night）.这里虽然有 the，却并不指定哪一天。 8．关于 each other 和 one another，参见 another 8和each 6，7和8 9．关于 He is the man of all others for the job 等句，参见 of 9 |
