词组 | ecstacy |
释义 | ecstacy Copperud 1980 says that ecstacy is "likely to be regarded as a misspelling; only Webster gives it as a variant." The Webster he's referring to is Webster's Third, which lists it as a relatively uncommon variant of ecstasy. These citations from our files show why we included ecstacy in Webster's Third: • I get carried away in an ecstacy of mendacity — George Bernard Shaw, Man and Superman, 1903 • ... his meditations approached ecstacy —Thornton Wilder, The Cabala, 1926 • ... occasions of ecstacy at the sights he saw —W. L. Schurz, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 9 Dec. 1956 • ... religious ecstacy —Harper's, June 1969 Although ecstacy is definitely an infrequent variant, it has been in use since the late 17th century. It persists because -acy words (as celibacy, delicacy, democracy, diplomacy, fallacy, intestacy, privacy) are much more numerous in English than -asy words (as apostasy, fantasy). |
