词组 perquisite, prerequisite
释义 perquisite, prerequisite
Shaw 1987 says these two words get their prefixes confused; the Oxford American Dictionary warns against confusion; Copperud 1980 distinguishes them. If you do not know the meaning of these words, you will find them plainly defined in any good dictionary. We have almost no evidence of the words' being interchanged in print; the OED says that perquisite is used erroneously for prerequisite but offers no examples, so we cannot say how far back possible confusion might go.
If you tend to mix up the spelling of the two words, here are a few clues to go by. First, if you want an adjective, it must be prerequisite; perquisite is a noun only. And the prepositions typically used with each word are different. Perquisite regularly takes of:
It is one of the perquisites of membership —PMLA, March 1982
... the perquisites of his position—a chauffeured limousine, a chef —Tony Schwartz, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 9 Dec. 1979
Prerequisite, on the other hand, usually takes for or to:
... has come to be nearly a prerequisite for leadership —Robert Pattison, On Literacy, 1982
... a prerequisite for graduation —James Cass, Saturday Rev., 29 May 1976
... making unfair demands as a prerequisite to improved relations —Lynda Schuster, Wall Street Jour., 3 Feb. 1982
... registration before an election is a prerequisite to casting a vote —American Girl, November 1952
Of is used, but somewhat less frequently:
... oratorical abilities—the first prerequisite, as he had always maintained, of a successful politician — William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960
