词组 | ended, ending |
释义 | ended, ending These words have caused some minor disagreements among usage commentators. The point at issue is whether ending can properly be used in describing a period that is in the past, as in "We were there for the week ending July 22." A few critics, dating back to Weseen 1928, have contended that ended is required in such a context ("... for the week ended July 22"), and that ending is only appropriate when speaking of the future ("We'll be there for the week ending April 4"). Other commentators, such as Partridge 1942, have argued that the use of ending to speak of the past is common and respectable. The most telling point has been made by Sir Ernest Gowers, who has noted (in Fowler 1965) that we always use beginning rather than begun when referring to a past period in terms of its start ("We were there for the week beginning July 15"). This use of beginning has been criticized by no one. Gowers calls the criticism of ending "pedantic," and we agree. Both ended and ending are idiomatic when speaking of the past. Use the one that seems more natural to you: • ... in the year ended last Sept. 30 —Newsweek, 19 Apr. 1948 • ... in the year ending last March 31 —Newsweek, 29 Nov. 1948 |
