词组 | enervate |
释义 | enervate To enervate is "to lessen the vitality or strength of or "to reduce the mental or moral vigor of." Some people use this word without really knowing what it means, a fact testified to by a few cryptic uses preserved in our files and by the usage books which admonish their readers not to use enervate to mean "stimulate," "invigorate," or "energize." Don't be misled by the superficial resemblance of enervate to these other words. It comes from Latin enervare, which was itself formed from the prefix e- ("out, out of) and -nervare (from nervus, "sinew, nerve"). The etymological meaning still lingers in enervate. • ... compelled the sluggish arms of an enervated system to begin to flail —Donald Kirk, Saturday Rev., 8 Jan. 1977 |
