词组 foreword, forward
释义 foreword, forward
Venolia 1982, Shaw 1970, 1975, 1987, Bremner 1980, and others warn against confusing the spellings of these two words. No one confuses the words themselves, and, as far as we know, no one has gone to print using the misspelling foreward for the directional forward. But the prefatory foreword does occasionally have the directional word put in its place:
... will contain a forward by Jamie Lee —US, 27 Aug. 1984
In the forward to his book —Newsweek, 18 Aug. 1986
It is sometimes muddled as foreward too.
Baron 1982 notes that foreword is one of a handful of Saxonisms—words of native stock proposed by Victorian philologist William Barnes and his followers to be used in place of words of French or Latin provenience— that have stuck successfully in the current language. Foreword was coined as a substitute for preface in 1842. Fowler 1926 condemned it as a vogue word and thought from 1924 evidence that it was on its way out. He "allowed himself a paragraph of exultation," as Evans 1957 puts it. But foreword is established. The paragraph of exultation was dropped by Gowers from the 1965 edition.
