词组 ageism
释义 ageism
Simon 1980 asperses ageism as an illiteracy. He also purports, ironically, not to understand its meaning. Ageism is a product of that new use of -ism to mean "prejudice, discrimination," which seems to derive from racism and earlier gave the language sexism. At worst, the word might be judged rather trendy (it originated around 1970):
"... Don't leave anything valuable lying around, like your stash. She's one heavy old lady, and we let her move in because we wanted to make a statement about ageism in America, but she's got these sticky fingers...." —Cyra McFadden, The Serial, 1977
... Granny Jump is a living warning against ageism —Joy Chant, Times Literary Supp., 28 Mar. 1980
... few gerontologists... have taken up arms against one of the most insidious forms of ageism—the myth of senility —Robin M. Henig, N.Y. Times Mag., 3 Dec. 1978
Such ageism may well be a major reason many people age poorly in this society —Ann E. Gerike, letter, Newsweek, 17 Nov. 1986
Our files show that the word has even reached Australia, so it may be with us for a while. Some writers will find it a conveniently brief way of putting a notion that otherwise requires a phrase; others may well prefer to leave it alone.
