词组 remind
释义 remind
Two commentators (Bernstein 1965 and Copperud 1964, 1970, 1980) issue warnings against what they consider to be intransitive uses of this transitive verb. Here is one of our few examples of the usage that they disapprove:
Your recent correspondence ... reminds of a question—Times Literary Supp., 11 Feb. 1983
This is better regarded as an absolute use of the verb than as a genuine intransitive; the direct object of remind, me in this case, is missing but understood. The OED labels such usage elliptical and illustrates it with two 19th-century citations. But the correct label— intransitive, absolute, or elliptical—is not really the issue. The commentators who object to the use of remind without an object do so because they find it unidiomatic, that is, because it does not sound right. Considering how rarely such usage occurs, we suspect that this feeling is shared by most other readers and writers.
