词组 stanch, staunch
释义 stanch, staunch
Fowler 1926 observed that the verb is usually spelled stanch and the adjective staunch. That observation still holds true today. The verb and adjective are both derived from the Old French estancher, meaning "to stop the flow of; stanch." The two spelling variants have been in reputable use for centuries, and they are standard both for the verb and for the adjective. Stanch is the much more common spelling of the verb:
... the icy cold ... had stanched the flow of blood —Brock Brower, Holiday, February 1966
... some evidence this has stanched the outward flow —William K. Stevens, N. Y. Times, 1 Mar. 1978
... has stanched a dangerous cash hemorrhage — Ralph E. Winter, Wall Street Jour., 11 Aug. 1981
      But staunch is not rare:
... in an attempt to staunch the flow of oil —Nature, 15 Feb. 1969
Proposition 10 may staunch the wounds —Wall Street Jour., 27 May 1980
For the adjective, staunch is by far the more common spelling, but stanch is also in widespread use:
... animal lovers who have been zoos' staunchest supporters —Jon Luoma, Audubon Mag., November 1982
... even now many programmers are staunch holdouts —Steve Olson, Science 84, January/February 1984
... once was a stanch ally of the West —Karl E. Meyer, The Reporter, 6 July 1954
... a stanch foe of the Vietnam war —Philip B. Kurland, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 14 Oct. 1973
