词组 category
释义 category
Copperud 1970 disparages the use of category in connections other than the scientific and philosophical and buttresses his opinion with that of three other writers, one of whom is reported to concede grudgingly that category in the sense of "class" is standard in the U.S. Shaw 1975 also concedes that the "class" use exists, but insists that category is really proper only in science or philosophy.
Now had these experts looked in the OED, they would have found that category has been used in the sense of "class" since 1660, and further that such use was stigmatized as "bad English" by a Lord Granville as far back as 1883. If you doubt that this horse, still being flogged by some usage writers, is truly dead, here are more than enough examples to demonstrate that the use is standard:
The impromptu writing must have ... declined faster and faster into the questionable category — Thomas Carlyle, review of Lockhart's Life of Sir Walter Scott, in London and Westminster Rev., 1838
... a rundown on the average proportions of our after-tax spending dollars Americans are now laying out in each major spending category —Sylvia Porter, Ladies' Home Jour, August 1971
Dr. Harper's generosity in money matters, personal and official, was embarrassing in both categories — Robert Morss Lovett, All Our Years, 1948
It isn't so broad a category as postwar fiction —Malcolm Cowley, Harper's, April 1953
... none of the writings of the fathers of the English Church belongs to the category of speculative philosophy —T. S. Eliot, "Lancelot Andrewes" (1926), in Selected Essays, 1932
... in the realm (or category ... ) of women's literature —Joyce Carol Oates, TV. Y. Times Book Rev., 5 June 1977
In speech, category is frequently used with fall in or into:
I don't think those things fall in the same category —Senator Lowell Weicker, radio interview, 28 Nov. 1975
Some fall into that category; some do not —Representative Christopher Dodd, radio interview, 10 Sept. 1981
