The principal distinction to be made between them is the one made by Copperud 1970, 1980: "... guarantee is by far the more commonly used." Some writers formerly preferred guaranty for the noun and guarantee for the verb, but guarantee is now the usual choice for both. The advice given by Fowler 1926 is still sound: "Those who wish to avoid mistakes have in fact only to use -ee always." |
