| 释义 | irrelevant Fowler 1926 notes that the OED contains a warning against the misspelling irrevelant; the same problem is mentioned by Copperud 1970, 1980, Bremner 1980, and Janis 1984. We have examples of the misspelling in our files, so care is warranted. Fowler also says that irrevelant is probably spoken a hundred times for every time it appears in print. The process that produces irrevelant from irrelevant in speech is called metathesis (which see). Metathesis has had a hand in producing some of our common words, like burn.
