词组 | hiccup, hiccough |
释义 | hiccup, hiccough Hiccup is the older spelling, and the one preferred by usage commentators, but hiccough has also been in use for several centuries (from 1628). Hiccough undoubtedly originated through a misunderstanding of hiccup, and the OED suggested in 1898 that it "ought to be abandoned as a mere error." It hasn't been, however. Hiccup is the more common spelling, but hiccough also continues in widespread, reputable use: •1918 appears as no more than a hiccough in this book —Times Literary Supp., 10 May 1974 • ... treatment for such afflictions as ... stroke, food poisoning, hiccoughs —Sally A. Lodge, Publishers Weekly, 1 Oct. 1982 • ... with hardly a hiccough —The Economist, 12 July 1985 The word is pronounced so that it rhymes with stickup, regardless of its spelling. |
