词组 | no |
释义 | no 1. No is often used in conjunction with other negatives, especially in speech. See double negative. 2. Ayres 1881 insists that when no introduces some sort of compound expression, it should correlate with nor: "no this nor that." Heritage 1982 insists that or, not nor, is required in the same situation. From this divergence of opinion we can infer that or was sometimes used in Ayres's time and that it has become prevalent during the century since: • Mr Edwards is no scholar or man of letters —Times Literary Supp., 22 Oct. 1971 • Rose sent no congratulations or messages —Gail Cameron, Ladies' Home Jour., August 1971 • There would be no backing down or hiding behind a convenient wall —Billie Whitelaw, quoted in Annabel, April 1974 But nor is still found on occasion: • ... no experienced editors, no office staff nor a distributor for the books —Kenneth C. Davis, Publishers Weekly, 2 Aug. 1985 Nor could be considered more emphatic than or, but in present-day use, emphasis is usually achieved by repeating the no: • There was no chair, no table, no sofa, no pictures — Graham Greene, Travels with My Aunt, 1969 • No pollution, no crime, no politics —John Fischer, Harper's, July 1972 3. "No" in the sense of "not." A few commentators around the end of the 19th century (Bardeen 1883 mentions three, one of which is Ayres 1881) objected to no qualifying a verb and meaning "not"—a matter chiefly of objecting to the phrase whether or no. Vizetelly 1906 said the practice had literary sanction. We have usually found or no (with or without whether) used in place of or not in literary contexts or by literary figures: • ... depends on whether or no his personal ambition is combined with intellectual ability —W. H. Auden, Antaeus, Spring/Summer 1976 • ... so vulnerable she registers it whether she will or no —Elinor Langer, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 4 Mar. 1984 • Laryngitis or no, the play has started off with a bang —Alexander Woollcott, letter, 19 Feb. 1940 • But personality or no, I have been aware of how much a part of you she was —E. B. White, letter, 20 Apr. 1957 • ... Sister Mary Teresa emerges as a real human, nun or no —Newgate Callender, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 1 Apr. 1984 See also whether or not. |
