词组 hike
释义 hike
The use of hike to mean "increase" is strongly censured by Bernstein 1965, but it is disparaged by no other commentator. Our evidence shows that this sense has been in use since at least the 1920s. Our earliest evidence for both the noun and the verb is from William Allen White's Emporia Gazette:
... shared in the wage hike under the new contract —Emporia (Kans.) Gazette, 16 Nov. 1926
... any attempt to hike the cost of building in Emporia —Emporia (Kans.) Gazette, 2 May 1927
Much of our early evidence is from headlines, in which the word's brevity gives it an obvious advantage. Its use outside of headlines has been common for decades, however. The contexts in which it occurs almost always have to do with money, and the increases it describes tend to be abrupt rather than gradual:
... the Administration's planned budget ... has been hiked to $103 million —David L. Martin, General Electric Investor, Summer 1971
... these charges are just another way to hike your overall room rate —Sylvia Porter, Ladies' Home Jour., October 1971
... the first drastic hike in oil prices during the 1973 Mideast war —Donald Kirk, Saturday Rev., 19 Mar. 1977
She also insists that the ... program will not necessitate a tax hike —Al Green, Houston Post, 9 Sept. 1984
These uses of hike occur chiefly in American English.
